Warmachine: Cryx VS Khador.
Jon vs Marcus.
500pts.
Army List:
Khador.
Butcher
Beast-09
Greylord Koldun Lord (Father Christmas)
Greylord Ternion
Manhunter
Man O War Drakhun (Dismount)
Man O War Demo Corp (x5)
Widowmakers.
Cryx.
Goreshade El Bastardo (minus sombrero)
Cankerworm
Nightwretch
Deathripper
Bane Lord Tartarus
Withershadow Combine
Bile Thralls (x8)
Bane Knights (x8)
Deployment.
Goreshade held the centre with his arc nodes in front to block LOS. The Bane Knights held his right flank with the biles on his left. The Withershadow combine stood behind and to the left also, along with Bane Lord Tartarus. The Cankerworm had advanced deployed behind the heavy woodland on the right flank.
Khador deployed in a two wave format, with the Man O War confidently leading the way. Butcher and his wintery pals (the Grey Lords) were behind, with the imposing Drakhun riding down the left flank (Marcus' right). Beast held the other flank and looked mean. Meanwhile the snipers had made their way to behind the large hill that the cankerworm hid behind, and the manhunter was way out on the left flank near to a small copse of trees.
Turn One
Cryx.
Cryx won the roll off and elected to go first. Everything shambled forward. Canker redeployed away from the snipers, slithering over the stone wall that divided the killing ground between the two forces. Goreshade advanced behind his jacks, putting up Cloak of Shadows (just in case) and completely forgetting to cast Dark Shroud on the Knights. Forgetting spells, a theme that was to occur later in the game. The Biles placed themselves to intercept the Manhunter and the Banes took relative shelter behind the larger wood. Tartarus also advanced to stand close to Goreshade along with the Combine.
Khador.
In return the bulk of the Butchers' force ran across the table. A solid wall of Man o Wars and Beast held the pass formed by the wall and large forest. The Drakhun held back slightly, but began rolling the flank to support the manhunter who had advanced behind the small copse. The Greylords put blizzards up to shield the wall of steel leading the way and Butcher added Iron Flesh. These guys were not going anywhere fast! Finally the snipers advanced through the woods and started shooting Bane Knights. Luckily Shadowshift allowed me to hide my undead warriors and I only lost two models to the accurate fire of the Khadorans.
Turn Two.
Cryx.
This turn I had planned to remove the sniper team and manhunter and setup the destruction of the Man O War. The Bane Knights advanced to the "pass" and set themselves up for a counter charge against anything that came their way. Meanwhile Tartarus advanced to shelter behind the wall, looking to assist the combat when it fell. Goreshade had given a point of focus to the Nightwretch, advanced behind the ripper and put Cloak of Shadows up. He also remembered to put Dark Shroud on the Bane Knights.
The wretch activated and closed with the snipers. The shot missed despite the boost, but the template scattered nicely and caught three of the four in the blast. Perfect... or so I thought. Sadly, despite needing a five or more to kill, I managed to only take out the leader. Two rolls of four left over half the team with no break test. I was a little miffed.
To make matters worse, the bile thralls advanced to surround the wood and purge on the manhunter. Sadly, despite me putting two bodies in to take him down, I had misaligned my arcs, causing me to dissolve one of the two thralls intended to purge. To compound my misery the purge only caused four points of damage to the 'hunter and he lived. Still, corrosion was up so surely he would die to that? Right...
Khador
Wrong... of course corrosion expired, leaving the 'hunter free to cause mischief. Out of four damage rolls in my turn I had failed to kill on three of them by one point! Gutted... me.. no... maybe.
The butcher could smell blood, but the range was a little too far this turn so he elected to instruct his troops to run into the breach, filling the space wall to wall with steel. Beast flanked the Man O Wars and again the Greylords added to their DEF with Blizzards and Iron Flesh was upkept. Shifting these guys was going to prove tricky.
On the left flank the manhunter wandered into combat with either the biles or Canker (my memory was hazy as I was still raging that he wasn't dead) but didn't do any major damage.(Edit: He killed the Bile Leader, I just remembered). The Drakhun ran into engage a Bile Thrall.
The Widowmakers sniped out two more Knights including the leader.
Turn Three.
Cryx.
Time to tidy up the flanks before the mess of combat in the centre distracted me.
The Withershadow and the 'Wretch combined their fire to clear out two more snipers, leaving the last to break and flee.
I again cast Cloak of Shadows with G.Shade, then . Tartarus cursed the Man O War, promoted a Knight to Leader and advanced. The knights stepped up and managed to put a little damage on the Man O War.
Meanwhile my Bile Thralls began systematic ranked purges, clearing out the pesky Manhunter and putting corrosion onto the Drakhun. I was left with about three Biles, but critically, Corrosion was up on the Horse Lord and Canker was feeling hungry.
Turning to face he slid over to the horse and began chomping. Due to the half ARM and boosted damage rolls the worm managed to put nine out of ten boxes of damage with his first hit. Imagine, failing by one point. Luckily he followed up with his barbed ass and impaled the noble steed. Of course this meant that the Lord fell off his horse backwards, dusted himself down and stepped back to engage the worm whilst being out of range of it's writing attacks.
Khador.
The Drakhun lost corrosion, but the Sniper continued to flee. The Butcher stepped toward the middle of the board, refusing to upkeep Iron Flesh 9(taking 3 damage in the process). The Greylords did something that I completely forget and Beast and the Man O Wars exchanged blows with the Banes, leaving four standing. Shadow shifting let me put do a couple of damage points back onto them.
Turn Four.
Cryx.
Things were looking grim in the middle of the board, but I had plans.
The Combine cast Puppet Strings onto Goreshade to assist in my setup.
Goreshade then cast the Claiming to steal Iron Flesh from the Man O War and place it onto the Bane Knights. Cleverly, I then forgot to cast Cloak of Shadows meaning I was suddenly a viable target for magic! Stupid move...
Tartarus cursed the Man O War then charged. Two Thresher attacks saw damage onto the Man O War and their leader on the left, but no kills (hence no free Bane Knights...) The remaining Knights exchanged blows with the Man O War and managed to take two down.
On the left flank the Bile Thralls moved forward and purged over the closest Man O Wars, adding a smattering of Damage.
Khador.
Butcher now had a shot at victory. Keeping all his focus he watched as the Man O War began to mop up the few remaining Knights. For each that fell a return blow would take down one of the might warriors though. Another had fallen to Corrosion and soon Beast stood alone.
Unperturbed the Butcher popped his feat, batted aside the lone Bane Knight trying to distract him then cast Avalanche at Goreshade. Luckily his aim was off and the massive boulder sailed harmlessly into the one empty space near to Goreshade.
The Greylords stepped up and sprayed three times at the Eldritch figure loitering behind his jack. Luckily the bulk of the shots missed, leaving him to take only four Damage. Also, one of the sprays targeted the Butcher, doing massive damage as Marcus rolled something crazy like 13 on his dice. At this point I was thinking about letting him roll all my damage dice till the end of the game.
Even Father Christmas couldn't find it in him to hurt the cowering form of Goreshade (the plus four ARM I had after forgetting to cast Cloak of Shadows was really helping).
Turn Five.
Cryx
And so the endgame fell. Sensing victory Goreshade kept all his focus. The Withershadow cast puppet strings on themselves, rolled a Hellfire, missing on double one. I would be re rolling that... luckily the second roll proved much more positive and I boosted the roll with the Widowmaker's soul. This chipped away at Butcher a little further. The second shot missed...
Tartarus walked over and threshered the greylords and Butcher, missing all three...
Sighing in frustration Goreshade decided to do it the old fashioned way.Unable to rely on his minions he walked over to Butcher, stopping only to pull the waiting Bane Thralls from the ether to surround the Khadoran caster "just in case".
The first swing of Bloodcleaver took the Butcher down to four points of health, following up with a second saw the raging bald warrior smashed to the floor. SA Goreshade wiped the mess from his axe the fallen body of the Butcher warped and twisted, his death energies allowing the Deatwalker to turn up, late for the party as always... still, who doesn't need a scantily clad goth hooker at the end of battle?
Summary.
An intense and close fought game that could have gone either way. Forgetting to cast Cloak of Shadows could have been fatal and I got off lightly. To say I was slightly concerned at that point would be an understatement.
Overall I very much enjoyed the game and Marcus is a great foe. He knows what he is doing with the army and it tanks a hell of a lot of damage, something that always stops Cryx in their tracks!
Now I need to have a quiet word with my troops about their inability to actually kill anything this game...
