And the gauntlet is thrown down, will the might of Rome triumph or will the unwashed barbarians prevail!

Or to put it another way Ish and I are adding another game to the club and bringing out a small ancients army at the end of the month (500pts to start off with). And I hope to get round to building the rest of my ~2000 pts at some point. Just thought I'd put it out as a new thread as an incentive to others who (like me) have been teetering on the edge of starting.

- Edit and how apt that I've got romans when I'm in team Caesar Tongue

Sounds interesting, do you have any links for info on this and where you might get models from as always have a weak spot for ancient Rome&Greece
for models try warlordgames.com for Roman, celt and Greek 28mm Plastics.
or the normal places (waylandgames, maelstorm or Renegademinitures.com etc) for metals.

Ish has been kind enough to lend me a pdf copy of WHA2 (which I intend to get in the new year (unless I get it for christmas....)) and I have a copy of clash of empires which appears very similar although characters are less heroic as they dont have there own attacks or stats.
Hey Tom, the cheapest plastic models are available from Warlord Games and Wargames Factory. Anyway, these are the ones I tried as I was in the process of changing all my inherited metals to plastics when life decided that I should stop spending money on my hobby. I can recommend both of them, though the quality of Warlord's models are far superior to that of the WF ones.
Have you decided which ruleset you are using?
WHA is the most common and Ish is familar with that rule set.....
wab 2nd ed is what I have and never tried any of the other ones. Read up on Hail Caesar but wasn't too impressed. Any suggestions?
Dont even think of getting 'Hail Caesar' they admit that its not a rule set for pick up games but rather GM'd ones for specific scenarios
Can I use War of the roses figures? Tongue

I'm waiting for some decent plastic persians to come out before I start collecting Ancients... though the plastic Immortal Miniatures Greeks are very tempting.

WAB 2nd Ed is currently half-price (£16) on the Warhammer Historical website - though apparently the sale is only on for a short time.

I've been slowly putting together a force of Imperial Romans, so would be interested in playing some ancients stuff.
We have a few people in Clapham with armies, mostly biblical and classical with a few vikings thrown in for good measure.

There was even talk of going to the WAB GT in January 2013 which is dark ages.
@ Yargalt.... get the age of chivilry supplement then Tongue as I'm sure my bretts can do that
A little bit off topic and I'll probably start up a separate thread about this sometime, but anyone interested in the new Saga rule set by Gripping Beast? Its Dark Ages skirmish (in this case meaning about 40 figs a side) with a really interesting set of mechanics using specialised dice (each faction has a separate set of dice with faction specific symbols) which determine the possible range of actions you can use to activate units each turn. I'm currently working on a Viking warband for this. I think they intend to expand the system to include the Crusades and possibly ancients.
I've seen it and was thinking of having a look at it...and once read the rule book might get some Saxon's or Anglo-Danes if I like it enough

Amazon keep telling me to buy this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trade-Treachery-...s_ir_all_2

You wouldnt want me to make Amazon sad now would you? Tongue
@JPS
We should get a game in some time then. Gives me an excuse to go to CWG as well; since I moved to West London I never even cross the river.. ATM I don't have my army in London though, but maybe in the new year.

@Machen
That sounds interesting, especially with the low prices of the models mentioned above. If you only need 30-40 models you can literally have all your options made with leftovers under £40 from plastics. Have you got the rulebook by any chance?
I have the rulesbook somewhere, god knows why. And actually, god knows where! I'll try and dig it out. This was one of the things I LOVED the idea of, but couldn't ever get anyone else interested.

Hi Ish,

I do have the rulebook - I'll bring it along next time I'm down the club. Saga looks like it's pretty fast play, and I've picked up enough plastic models for a standard Viking warband for around £30. That said, the rulebook itself is quite expensive: £25 for a 74 page softcover (although it is in full colour and beautifully produced). It also comes with 4 faction specific cardboard 'battleboards' (Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Normans and Welsh) which are key to the game's dice mechanic.
I think Ish already knows I have the foundations for a Greek army... or Macedonian.
