Hello! I was looking around for a London Gaming Club to join and I found cross-gaming.

Long-story short: I'm an American in my final year of university leaving the states to study at Imperial College for a term. I play 40k and was hoping to check out the 40k and war-gaming scene in London. I'll be living within walking distance of Kensington GW.

I'm looking forward to dropping by. I arrive in London on the 5th (Jan.) Does the club meet every Thursday night?
Hi there man, we meet almost every Tuesday and Thursday. Unfortunately, next week is our last week till we break up for Crimbo. But please feel free to come down on Thursday and see if you like the place, there's a pretty solid community of gamers at the Cross so you'll have no trouble finding games. Big Grin
Welcome to the club, nice to have such far flung gamers coming to check it out. We are restarting the club at the beginning of Jan, so it will be 3rd (tues) and 5th (thurs). Thursday nights are members nights so you would need to pay £20 lifetime membership if you want to come on that night (though you can come and watch if you like). There are two sessions on tuesday nights, 6:00-8:30 and 8:30-11:00 (though the second can overrun a bit). Tables are £3 per game for members or £5 per game for non members. First game is free, so come down and check it out, see what you think.

We have got quite a few 40k gamers down at the club, though Warmachine/Hordes is the most popular game. You are sure to find an opponent though for 40k. Which armies do you play?

If there is anything else you want to know then post up.
Are we trying to confuse people with faces now? lol
Welcome man, there are plenty of 40k gamers at the club, but recently the main game systems have actually been Infinity, Malifaux and WarmaHordes... check them out if you haven't already! Big Grin
I actually picked up a mercenary codex for War-machine. It looked very interesting steam-punk style and the low-amount of models needed was a great change from the absurdly expensive Warhammer.

Turbo, if you guys are breaking up when does the club meet back again? I was planning to drop by say Thursday the 12th. Will you guys be around then? What is Crimbo?

Marcus, I play Dark Eldar and Eldar. I love my fragile weak skinny elves. heh, around here in MARY-land its always space marines vs. space marines or spiky evil space marines. >_>
Hehe, "Crimbo" is slang for Christmas. You know, worshipping a bloody corpse on a cross by eating too much, receiving presents you don't actually want, giving people expensive stuff they don't want either, getting drunk and trying to tolerate your family for more than five seconds at a time without starting world war three by telling auntie Mabel what a spiteful old bitch you think she really is.

Oh yes please Mabel, another mince pie would be lovely.

Yes yes, my nickname actually is Scrooge.

I believe the club gets going again properly in the first week of January so the 12th should be fine.

Oh, and on the subject of cheap to get in to, but totally awesome (especially the miniatures range... or how balanced the rules are... or...) *cough*http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en/*coughcough*

If you're into Elves, you should definitely try and have a chat with Tim, who's our resident pointy eared expert/elf fetishist Smile

I think we should be rolling by 12th Jan. We're running a Warmachine Slow-grow league in Jan - head over here if you want to sign up, we're running an intro night on the 5th Jan if you can make it. If you're looking for the elf faction come and join us new Retribution of Scyrah players... I'd point out that Ret are neither skinny or fragile though. They're combined arms elves and they're pissed! Smile

Oh, and Infinity rocks as well. it's refreshing to bring 10 models to the table and call it your army. Cheap point of entry too (though it can get expensive when you start collecting the beautiful minis...!)
You know some people here in the states play Infinity too. But honestly it seemed like too much of a skirmish level game for me and some of the post-apoc factions look weird.

I might get into Warmachine when I join up with you guys. The steelheads and jacks in the mercenaries codex looked interesting. I guess I shall have to bring my painting supplies with me. Do guys ever do painting at the club too?

If anyone lives in Kensington let me know and we can meet up at the GW there for a game or too.

That would be Chris, Tim's fetish is far darker and more twisted then even dark elves! Tongue
Join our Warmachine slow grow! It'll be a great intro to the game - and the club! There's a whole sub forum over in the privateer press forum and you can sign up over there.

Also, welcome!

There's no painting happening at the club, really, we're not set up for it. But there are some great painters who'll be more than happy to talk about... whatever it is painters talk about. That's not really my thing.
Infinity is very much a skirmish game... but it's also the best game ever. You'll just end up selling every model you own through lack of use if you started. But on a serious note, check the game out sometime at the club, you have to see how it plays before you really get it.

Warmahordes is a good one to start up now, I would if I had the cash flow to get me some nasty dirty Cryx. Alas it will have to wait until I've bought all the Infinity minis.

Regarding all things GW, there is a decent mix of armies at the club to play against, sure there are lots of marine players (me included) but off the top of my head I think every army is represented by at least one player. You won't have any trouble finding games that is for sure! Big Grin
Hello mate and welcome to the club. Just confirming that we are now officially closed for the year (yesterday being the last gaming night).
Nonetheless come down for drinks on Friday if you're up for it and definately come down in the new year for gaming.
Since everyone's lobbying for their game system I'm gonna tempt you with Malifaux which is another steampunk skirmish style game with a dose of old western and horror added to the mix.
Good thing about Tuesdays is that we have 2 sessions which usually results in everyone playing a game and then hanging about drinking and chatting for another couple of hours which makes it a real Club and lets you socialise and try new games, so rest assured, you will try all of the mentioned games sooner or later. Everyone seems to be missing the fact that Dorian has said he wont be in the country until the start of January.
It's like you didn't read his entire post or something...
Lol that's good point, I thought he said he will be coming to London on 5th December...
Not used to such organised forward planning... Tongue
I read the OP Tongue

I've been quietly chuckling about that as I've read the replies.

Welcome Dorian, btw Smile
I read the OP too! Smile
Thanks for all the warm welcomes! I'm just finishing up finals and hoping my UK study VISA gets back to me in time before my flight. Did you mates know it costs 450 USD to apply for the VISA? (around 300 GBP) I read about the British pub culture there - supposed to be completely different from an American bar. Looking forward to it. I'm sure I'm in for a good culture shock when I get there.

Just to be sure, you guys are still at the St. Christopher's Inn right? The last update on your home page was in 2010. :-)
Yep, a word of warning though, as there are 2 st Christopher establishments on the street. We're in the basement of the one that's painted green...

It doesn't cost us any less to go to the US either... Wink

Yupp, as Markya said, still in the St Christopher's Inn, the one closer to the Thames. You will likely get into the pub culture fairly quickly as St Chris's is a pub, although the only big difference I can think of is that brits don't order a shot with every beer. (And that it's not weird to go to the pub with your whole family - kids and all - and still get hammered.)
But that's only through the eyes of the foreigner, the natives know better, I suppose.
