Never read it, but several friends have recommended it. Due to our Dark Heresy campaign I'm currently wading through Inquisitor. Showed it to one of the GW staff, who promptly gathered all his friends around so that they could revel in the light of this ancient relic... It's so oldskool the gold lettering has all rubbed away.

Haha, she's like Vish in girl edition! Big Grin

Review sounds pretty dumb though, she probably never made it beyond the prologue...
Just for all you Iain Banks fans out there, BBC 6music is doing a show where writers talk about their books and choose music that has influenced them. Banks is doing it this Sunday at noon. I am sure all the graphic designers out there know 6music, but for those who dont, here is the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music . You should all be listening to it anyway, best radio out there

This is relevant to my interests.

Currently reading a rather amusing biography on Rommel.
Ooooh... could be interesting Smile
Thanks for the heads up! Radio 6 is good but they don't play enough ATR for my liking so I'm usually on spotify all day. Tongue

I just finished reading Dune. I have owned this book for about 14 years and never read it. I went away for a long weekend and needed something to read on the ferry. Grabbed this book and I devoured it. Really enjoyed it, does anyone know if the other books in the series are any good ?

I have read them all and I have to say that the first is definitely the best. The others are worth a read, but after about book 3 he starts losing the plot and you end up with God-Emperors covered in baby sandworms and little girls possessed by lecherous old men.

Definitely worth reading: Dune, Dune: Messiah and Children of Dune.

IMO
I've not read the Dune series for years, but recall loving them. They do get rather bizarre as they progress - I always had the feeling they were working on a mental level somewhat above my own... The ones his son wrote as he took over the series were pretty good, but the original Frank Herbert novels are the best.

LOL.

Wow I read Dune when I was 15 years old and it is still possibly my favorite Sci-Fi of all time.

Don't read the prequels by his son, read Children of Dune... God Emperor... the stuff that Frank Herbert actually wrote. I also recommend moving on to Asimov's foundation series as well.
Been ages since I read them but I really enjoyed all of them, including the Brian Herbert novels... Then again I'm easy to please. Tongue
Dune is one of those journeys where you can obv see different themes each time you read it. I read it as a kid and loved it for the adventure. My most recent exploration was to re-read Frank's original 5 books backwards from 5 to 1 and read Hunters of Dune, the one written by Frank Jnr that follows Dune 5, at the same time.

I think it's fair to say that each of Frank's books explore his ideas from a different angle, but its not until you reflect that he was writing Dune 5 in the final stages of watching his wife die horribly of cancer that his style and plot points get nailed to some frame of a reference. I am still in the process of reading and trying to work out when she was diagnosed and furthermore, when they were told it was terminal, from the twists of his writing. I could simply look it up but this way is perversely more fun.

Frank Jnr is sadly Dan Brown to his father's William Gibson. Yes, the sequels and prequels are fun, but its the difference between being given a map, compass and a checkpoint verses a ride on a mangy ass with some hilariously accented tour guide, patronisingly telling you what you can see on your left...

I wish they had and hadn't been written. It was more of a jungle hack through hamfisted denouement than anything else, which was exhausting. But I had to know the what they felt happened to the characters.
Can't be compared to the classic of sci-fiction but does anyone here read the Warhammer 40k novels and the Horus heresy novels?
I have read some! Here's a real basic rundown of the zingers and shitters. Big Grin

Horus Heresy:
1) Horus Rising: The seeds of heresy are sown. Really good. ShyShyShy
4) The Flight of the Eisenstein: Absolutely hated it. Crappy Angry
6) Descent of Angels: Loyalty and honour. Really made me sad. Angry
7) Legion: Secrets and lies. Awesome book. Big GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig Grin
9) Mechanicum: War comes to Mars. Titans!! Big GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig Grin
10) Tales of Heresy. Some good ones in here. Big GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig Grin
11) Fallen Angels: Deceit and betrayal. Poorly written mess. Angry
16) Age of Darkness. Some awesome ones in here. Big GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig Grin

That's my HH rundown. I didn't like the Dark Angel ones because they are crap. And I love the Dark Angels so it's saying a lot. Sleepy
Been reading copious amounts, finished reading The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. Was a fucking good laugh, lots of hilarious deaths due to poor design of weapon systems and some awesome images of the future. Definitely recommend this and A Separate War, which gives a different version of things through an another set of eyes.

Rereading this old chestnut, Use of Weapons. Funny as fuck, especially the bit when he's going through all the Culture's guns and looking for one with the right feel to it.

I have a copy to give out to someone for Christmas. So if you haven't read it, just post on here and I'll aim to get it to you before Christmas eve. Big Grin

Haha, the waste heat fin and the ice block. Epic lulz.
Did you see they're making a film of the Forever War? Ridley Scott at the helm, so it should have SFX and action done well, plot / acting is a coin toss. Apparently Haldeman's on board so if nothing else he can't complain if it's garbage. Also, it's in 3D so they're throwing some money at it.

Both the GF and I are enormous Haldeman fans so really hoping this will be good. (Esp after the excitement of WWZ and then seeing the utter fucking hash Pitt is making of it.)
