Well, it's been pretty quiet in here for a little while, besides the quite interesting rules discussion post, so I figured I'd try and start a bit of dialogue...
What kind of events do you like to play in, or run, or be part of, or whatever?
I think I'd break these down into two main sections: Competitive, and non-competitive, although I think there is more grey in there than might be implied...
So, a competitive event. A tournament or league, most commonly. Winning is the goal, and you should enter into it with your eyes open that everyone there is going to be trying to win, if possible.
I've had a blast in the leagues and tournies that we've run down at the Cross, and even generally enjoyed the ETC last weekend, looking back on it.
I find they generally leave me with good memories, and wanting to do better next time...
Non-competitive events, I suppose are more like campaigns, or narrative driven leagues. I personally love coming up with ideas like these, and I really enjoyed the London Stampede run over at Tanelorn, which I think falls into a non-competitive area, but nicely highlights my next point...
Even non-competitive events will have a winner, due to the nature of wargaming...
I think the major difference is the method used to get to the end result, but is this the case?
What do you guys think?
What would you guys like to play in, and what have you played in that you've enjoyed?
-Tom.
I think I didn't experience a friendly list in WM/H yet. For now I feel like the game is built to be competitive (which I like) and works best as such. I will appreciate any event as more WM/H is never bad.
Maybe the best solution is to have narrative driven campaign with competitive lists? I have no idea how to run such thing as my experience in WM/H is quite poor ana I lack knowledge of fluff, but I believe it's possible. What do you think?
Some kind of regular long-term league thing would be nice, but really any event would be ace
Saturdays are out for me as a general rule though

As a side note I'm going to the states to visit family next week, does anyone want me to pick up anything for them? I've not looked at prices but I'd assume with exchange rates and such there should be savings to be had somewhere.
I view all of the games I play as non-competitive, especially given the friendly atmosphere we play in. Therefore whenever there will be a tourney/campaign at the club, it would be seen as non-competitive. But then again, I know that some people are going to take things more seriously than others, so it would depend on the individual taking part.
I know when we held the Charing Cross Crush mini tourney last year (I had only been playing for a month or so) I had a great time. Also taking part in the recent Necromunda campaign was an extremely relaxed affair but a lot fun none the less.
After my first year playing PP games, I think I'm ready to put my gameface on and go for something competitive, which I see as an event outside CGC (for example the recent Maelstroms' ETC event).
Either way, both types of game would be highly enjoyable as that's the way the game was designed.
I'd be up for some sort of competitive thang at the club. As always, weekends aren't great for me so I'd prefer something on the usual club night. The mini tournies which were run a couple of times at B&C would be good.
And +1 to the comments above that trying to encourage 'friendly' / 'fluffy' lists is a bit of a non-starter given that Warmahordes is really written as a balls-to-the-wall competitive rules set. I say that in the full knowledge that I will get pwned by most people in such an environment!
Though to add to that - a narrative campaign of some sort, with perhaps faction teams or something similar would also be v cool. Like Martin, I don't know the fluff that well, but would get into the spirit if Tom was to give us some background to the thing.
I can see this including some fun restrictions such as no (self) comp rules, but everyone has to try to use a Tier list (where possible), etc.
Nice thread Tom!
I for one loved league we ran last year, but feel like experiencing a campaign. Because in a campaign generally there is a element of competitives (seeing that someone usually wins) - but there's room to have fun with it. Tournies - well the ETC was my first real (i guess) tourny that I've played in. I really enjoyed it, though I wouldn't regualerly set out to go to everyone of them.
But I love the idea of starting up a league soon! that be wicked.

I think this is quite an interesting point...
And I think, overall, I disagree.
I quite often build lists that I want to play simply because they are fun (which I suppose is a personal judgement anyway), or have a very strong gaming style, or contains a few key pieces that work well together etc etc.
I, personally, think these are friendly lists. I'm not saying they're not competitive, but I think they're friendly, which is the key thing.
A truly non-friendly list is one that gives you no real options to fight against it, or simply kills you before you get a chance to do anything effective...
I also think that PP are trying to give people more clues as to what a fluffy list looks like (in their opinion) with the Tier lists, and give you a few bonuses to make up for making your list as one-dimensional as they generally end up...
I have to head out to work now, but I will be responding regarding campaigns etc when I get home again.

Well, I am up for pretty much anything, and since it will be myself and A_bomb! who will probably end up running this stuff (probably with some graphical help from minus_t) I am really glad we have got this thread to discuss what you like.
Personally I have been thinking about running a map based campaign for a while now, and Vish and I did discuss this before he left. I am thinking of doing this in the next few weeks (Oli we need to chat). I would like to insist on theme lists, but that isn't practical at the moment since Hordes only have 1 so far. Who would want to join this? I would probably run it for 6-8 weeks so that it doesn't drag, but we could make it a bit longer (say 12 weeks, and you need to play 6 of those) if people do not want it so intense.
Also, a tournie would be good. I am going to post up a poll so people can give their favourate days and we can see what turns up.
You know what Marcus you made a good point about tier lists. Maybe we could enforce the min battle group - maybe 13 to 15pts min (excluding caster pts) for 35pt list? what do other people thing about restriction like these?
Restrictions will help with how fluent things are run, yet make gaming slightly more challenging.
What I've liked to try is random scenarios on map based games. It's fair enough, for example my khador force knows where to go to fight a cygnar force, but what about the other forces on patrol, or finding random encampments etc?
Bugger didn't mean to press post.
How about more than 2 player games? I know space is slightly limited, but 3/4 player games is possible, points wise limiting of course for time restrictions
