Hey guys, I whats to start a thread on peoples opinions on when they think is the beast time to go for the assassination? Is it right when you see the chance? Or do you like to hang back till it's almost certain that you can pull it off. Or do you just grind your opponent down till they give up because its only there caster that's left
I for one love going for the kill right when I see it. I love making those combos that are amazing when you pull them off, but go tits up when it doesn't go according to plan. The other thing that I think about is, what is the rest of my army doing? So while I go for the kill, I make sure that there is a backup plan (though it might only be half assed

).
My assassination attempts consist of going for the kill, messing up the dice rolling, and then pulling everything I have back around my caster to stop someone getting to him/her! I am not so good at it.
Usually depends on the list I'm running; most of my lists are geared towards grindfests because it's generally a safer route. If your opponent understands your assassination options they'll rarely give you the chance to go for it.
I guess it can also come down to how things are going so far in that game. If our lists are matched-up poorly or if I've screwed something up majorly (even if both our forces are mostly untouched so far) I'll go for anything that has more than 50/50 odds. For instance if I'm running someone intensive on defensive upkeeps like the Old Witch against a Harby list I'll happily go crazy with gallows and unseen path at the first opening to try and nail harby.
Otherwise if I'm confident I can continue to attrition away and come out ahead (something khador is generally pretty good at) then I almost always ignore chances to assassinate.
I find going for the assassination just sort of presents itself. I generally use casters that have a penchant for increasing the odds of my aggressors to hit and then go for the kill when everything is right. I usually start a set up for assassination after a second/third turn push and usually aim for one as a counter offensive. I've put off assassination runs in the past just because I've felt them too risky. I would only suggest this if your forces are in a strong position and able to "weather the storm" as it were.
Hope that gives you a slice into the cake that is my head.
EDIT: Also the second best time to go for a kill is when your opponent over extends himself. That's usually pretty rock solid.
